Pojdte Pane #6 :: Created by Bretislav Pojar and Miroslav Stepanek :: 1965-67 Charming Stop Motion Animation Part 1 of 2

Inventive, wittily creative, and animated with a physical humor that transcends language and time.

According to The Motion Brigades:
Between 1965 and 1967, Czechoslovakian animator Bretislav Pojar made a series of six shorts called Hey Mister, Let's Play. The mostly stop-motion cartoons star two bears—one smart, the other not so much. Pojar made five more episodes featuring the same bears in the early-1970s, this time calling it Who Threw That, Gentlemen?.
This video is the first short—"Potkali se u Kolina" ("How They Met At Kolin")—which introduces the characters. The cartoon is over forty years old yet it looks as fresh and vital as any cartoon being produced today. How did they ever manage to create something with so much charm and appeal? It's not an easy thing to accomplish, and director Pojar and designer Miroslav Stepanek make it all look so effortless. The animation of the characters is particularly fun to watch with stylized movement and graphic inventiveness abound.

Vincent - Tim Burton's 1982 Animation Short

Shortly before leaving Disney, Tim Burton developed a friendship with Vincent Price during the creation of this film. 

 Burton later described the experience as life-shaping.

Movie Trailer For A Town Called Panic :: English Subtitles :: Stop Motion

The original French short films charmed me, perhaps because my ability to understand French dialogue is on the level of a young child. 

 

When I heard the full length film was being released in North America after a screening at Cannes, I wanted to book a flight for New York. However, patience is a virtue I'm working on. 

 

I'll screen the film in March when it finally comes here.

News of the death of Art Clokey came as a sad surprise via this article in the LA Times.

Timothy Lee Hittle's Clay Animation Film: The Potato Hunter

Cringing at the death of a bison-like potato, I fell in love with Hittle's early 16 mm stop motion animation.

Hittle states on YouTube, "1991. 16mm film. This was shot before video assist technology was available. You carefully planned the animation and went for it. But you had to wait to get the film processed to see the shot for the first time."

Timothy Lee Hittle is Producer and Director of Animation for Gumby Dahrma, winner of the documentary Emmy in 2008. Hittle is the creator of Jay Clay and Blue, the lead characters of his films Potato Hunter and Canhead. The third Jay Clay film, which will complete the trilogy, is a work in progress. Canhead was nominated for an Academy Award in 1996, for Best Animated Short. His credits include Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach; Pixar's A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, and The Incredibles; and with Henry Sellick Monkey Bone and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
